What to look for when inspecting recessed light fixtures ( luminaire )?

During a Home Inspection, it is difficult if not impossible most times to know if the recessed light fixture (luminaire) is rated for the exiting installation.   If any discoloring is noted around the fixture, further evaluation by a licensed electrician shall be recommended.

You can unscrew the the light bulb from a canister and look inside the canister. The letters “IC” are verification that the fixture is rated for insulation contact. You may also see the words “Air Tight”.  If so, the installation can be sealed to prevent air from passing between the house and the attic.

Other times you may be able to inspect the light fixture from the attic space.  Inspect the exterior canister for a label that may better describe the fixture installation requirements.

If you are still unable to determine the requirements for the fixture installation, refer out to a licensed electrician to ensure the fixtures are properly installed.
