Slant/Fin was founded by Mel Dubin in 1949. Mel was convinced there was a better way to manufacture fin-tube radiation and he was determined to find it. Mel’s story (and eventually our story) started in the back of a bakery in Coney Island, New York, with a focus on commercial grade elements. The original design was a locked, slanted fin - hence the name Slant/Fin. Mel had lots of stories - his favorite about the small original work area. "We had to manufacture 10 - foot elements one - half at a time, then open the back door to turn it around to finish." For more than half a century, heating contractors, engineers and builders alike have depended on Slant/Fin for products of the highest quality. Today, we install heating equipment in millions of homes in the United States, Canada and around the world. In April 2021, Mestek, Inc. acquired the baseboard assets of Slant / Fin, a leading provider of hydronic baseboard radiation. The acquisition of Slant / Fin baseboard assets brings together a major business component of two family - run companies who have always focused on consistently manufacturing and delivering superior quality, solutions - based hydronic heating equipment to residential and commercial customers across North America.

Slant/Fin Age & equipment life expectancy

Many homeowners want a Home Inspector to predict how long their HVAC equipment will last. This is simply impossible and beyond the scope of a Home Inspection — depending on the model, installation, maintenance, and fuel source its lifetime could be anywhere between 1 to 30 years or more.

The first step you should take when determining the HVAC equipment’s age is to check the manufacturer’s label attached to the unit.

The  label will often include pertinent information including:

  • Manufacturer Name
  • Brand Name
  • Manufacture Date
  • Model Number
  • Serial Number

If you can’t determine the installation date of the HVAC Equipment, it’s worth checking to see if you’re nearing time for a replacement based on the manufactured date/age.  You can use the model number in conjunction with the serial number of the unit in order to determine the HVAC equipment’s age.
