Brick Orientation

The way a brick is laid makes a significant difference in the way it supports a structure, stands up to wear-and-tear, and appeals to aesthetics. There are six basic brick orientations for a standard rectangular brick.

TERM = Sailor

DEFINITION = A brick laid vertically with the broad face exposed.

TERM = Stretcher

DEFINITION A brick or other masonry unit laid horizontally in a wall with the longer edge or parallel to the surface.

TERM = Header

DEFINITION A brick or other masonry unit laid horizontally in a wall with the shorter end exposed or parallel to the surface.

TERM = Soldier

DEFINITION = A brick laid vertically with the longer face edge exposed.

TERM = Rowlock

DEFINITION = A brick laid horizontally on the longer face edge exposed.

TERM = Shiner

DEFINITION = A brick laid horizontally on the longer edge with the broad face exposed. Also called a Bull Stretcher.
